The School District of North Fond du Lac
    Internet - Acceptable Use Policy
    Engagement Study Participants
    December 2011 revised
    Main Purpose of Study:
To find out if the iPad2 has an impact on a student’s effectiveness and efficiency as it relates to educational achievement and engagement. The District is advocating for each student to individualize the device to best meet his or her learning style and educational and personal needs.
    Overview of Responsibility:
By agreeing to be part of the School District of North Fond du Lac’s Student Engagement Project, you and your guardian are to follow all study requirements (including providing information to researchers as required), only store appropriate media (pictures, music, documents, videos) on the iPad2, and be responsible for the safety and maintenance of the iPad2. The District is asking for a $20, refundable security deposit for the iPad2. This money will be used if necessary, to offset any damage that happens to the iPad2 under the students’ care (this does not included malfunction or defects of the iPad2 – the District does carry a warranty for these problems). If the iPad2 is stolen or lost, you will have a $100 fine placed on your school account. If the iPad2 is returned with no damage after the study, you will be refunded your $20.
The purpose of this study is to see the impact the iPad2 has on your engagement (being more actively involved in learning) and achievement (how much new knowledge and skills you acquire), as well as seeing how/ if this device can make you more efficient and effective in your education and personal life. The District wants you to use the iPad2 for personal and educational matters;it is your responsibility to have the iPad2 charged and with you at school every day.
You will be developing an Apple ID and meeting with Mr. Hayes and/or Ms. Stevens to get your iPad2 set up and get all the paper work completed. Your Apple ID must be tied to your School email and will be used to download apps, utilize FaceTime, and address any other elements that require an Apple ID. If you wish, with your parent’s consent, you can create your personal ID, tied to a different email, that can be used to purchase music, personal apps, or retrieve/rent/purchase other apps. If you want to get an educational app for your iPad2, you need to request it from Mr. Hayes or Ms. Stevens, they will make the decision to purchase the app with District funds and if approved, will send you a link to download the app utilizing your school email associated Apple ID.
All appropriate use policies provisions apply to the iPad2. The iPad2 will logged into the secure District WiFi and your iPad2 will be part of a mobile device management system (a profile you cannot remove – if you remove enrollment in to the MDM you will be terminated from the study and the iPad2 will be reclaimed by the District).
    iPad2 Specific Appropriate Use Guidelines:
iPad2s issued to students are District property and are intended to be used to make learning more efficient and effective and enhance his or her life. The District promotes the use of the iPad2s not only for the educational purposes, but understands the importance of the student to also use the device for personal, organizational, communication and creative purposes. Any personal information, data, files or applications that are stored on the District issued iPad2 are subject to decency and appropriateness standards and at any time can be inspected for inappropriate materials or content by administration or teachers. If any inappropriate content or applications are found, the device will be confiscated and the student maybe subject to further discipline. The iPad2s are district property and any personal content should follow appropriateness of content guidelines, all copyright laws and licensing agreements.
Any misuse of the iPad2 in the school or on school grounds, including use at inappropriate times, utilizing the applications or capabilities to violate other policies and rules will result in the immediate confiscation of the device. If a teacher, aide, administrator, support staff tells you to put the iPad2 down or away, you must follow the directive.

High School Mobile Technology Case Study
The School District of North Fond du Lac
The School District of North Fond du Lac, in order to best serve our students, is dedicated to invest in practices and tools that make engagement and achievement more efficient and effective!
The ability to positively impact student engagement and improve the efficiency and effectiveness of learning in and out of schools has led to the experimentation of utilizing a mobile technology device to help students support and differentiate the educational experience to best meet his or her needs. The District is investigating if iPad2s are a viable device that could have the desired impact to increase student engagement and achievement. Because of the significant change in paradigm of curricular delivery methods, utilizations of funds and the need to evolve education to be more relevant and effective, the District feels it is necessary to immediately begin introducing mobile technology into the learning environment. At the high school level, it is also very important to see innovation first hand that students produce (without adult restriction) to help make his or her life, inside and outside school, more organized, engaging and productive. Because of cost and the need to collect data, the District will start with a case study of 10 – 15 students over a two month period (two different groups)
    Case Study (basic premise):
10-15 students have school issued iPad2s that he or she utilizes 24hours a day, 7 days a week to help engage the student in learning and make that learning more efficient and effective.
Students are trained to use the basics of the iPad (by EMT) and the student and parents/guardians agree to Appropriate Use Polices and are responsible for any loss or damage to the iPad (beyond factory parts and accidents).
Students complete a pre-iPad survey, write journals every three days (at minimum) with the appropriate instructed app, reflecting on how the iPad has replaced, enhanced or allowed them to innovate the learning process as well as address issues and concerns the student has about the piece of technology.
If the student does not do the required reflections, he or she will be taken out of the case study and the next person on the list will take their place following training. Students that have their own iPad, may be allowed to bring the device to school if it is registered with the District and put on the Wi-Fi by an administrator.
    Timeline
By November 11th, Select a grade level and randomly select 30 students (list 1-30)
Week of November 14th – meetings with the selected class, chosen students and parents about the Engagement Project.
Week of November 28th – Students get issued iPads, instruction by EMT and Parent meetings
